Playing with a 'loopie' toyMerry Go Round Toy & Leisure Library is a registered charity which runs a toy library in Exeter. Our first toy library, Merry Go Round, opened at the end of 1999 and is based in Exeter Scrapstore on the edge of Belmont Park. The Scrapstore is also a charity and we work well in partnership together.

Merry Go Round Toy Library proved to be so popular with families, carers and children that in November 2006 we opened a new branch, Carousel Toy Library, in West Exe Children’s Centre in St Thomas. Sadly this toy library had to close in December 2017 after more than 11 years due to changes in services at the Centre.

We are very happy to say we will be opening Spinning Top Toy Library in the Beacon Centre in Beacon Heath in March 2018, thanks to both the Beacon and a grant from the Big Lottery.

The toy libraries are open not only for families with children aged from a few months to early teens, but also for any groups or individuals involved in providing daycare for children. You may be a foster parent or childminder, or involved in a group activity such as afterschool club, playscheme or preschool. Anyone who looks after children is welcome to become a member! Toy Libraries are exciting places to visit, like an Aladdin’s cave full of things you want to take home; they are centres for lending the best toys and games which adults and children can enjoy together. Many of our toys promote inclusion, with some specially designed for children with disabilities. We also have a wide range of resource books and multicultural toys. We are happy to give advice about specific toys for individual children, or alternatively what resources would suit group play. Come and visit us! Why not try a new game or puzzle, borrow some stilts or spinning plates, make creations from zoobs, junior mechano or K’Nex? Lots of toys for older children as well as for your little ones. Come and visit Tuesday 10-1 or Thursday 1-4, we’d love to see you!

Merry Go Round Toy Library – Changes to Fees from 1st February 2018

Annual membership fee increase of £1 to £6 per year

Toy hire of cheaper toys increase of 10p to 50p per week.

No change to hire of more expensive toys (£1.20 & £1 deposit)

Resource books reduced to 30p per week.

Reduced rates for long term hire (6 weeks)

More expensive toys: £6

Cheaper toys £2.50

Books: £1.50

These are the first changes we have made in several years as we aim to keep costs as low as possible to make toys affordable for all members. All income raised from fees goes towards running costs – we welcome donations if members are happy to pay more

Christmas Opening Times

Carousel will be lending toys this week (14th December), with the last session on 21st December for returning toys and having a play. Carousel members can transfer to Merry Go Round Toy Library, or to our new toy library in the Beacon Centre in Beacon Heath which will open once we have secured funding.

Last session at Merry Go Round before Christmas is Thursday 21st, reopening on Tuesday January 2nd,
