Merry Go Round Toy & Leisure Library is a registered charity which runs a toy library in Exeter. Our first toy library, Merry Go Round, opened at the end of 1999 and is based in Exeter Scrapstore on the edge of Belmont Park. The Scrapstore is also a charity and we work well in partnership together.

Merry Go Round Toy Library proved to be so popular with families, carers and children that in November 2006 we opened a new branch, Carousel Toy Library, in West Exe Children’s Centre in St Thomas. Sadly this toy library had to close in December 2017 after more than 11 years due to changes in services at the Centre.

We opened another toy library, Spinning Top, in the Beacon Centre in Beacon Heath in March 2018, thanks to both the Beacon and a grant from the Big Lottery. This has a really large play area and purpose built display cupboards for all the toys.

The toy libraries are open not only for families with children aged from a few months to early teens, but also for any groups or individuals involved in providing daycare for children. You may be a foster parent or childminder, or involved in a group activity such as afterschool club, playscheme or preschool. Anyone who looks after children is welcome to become a member! Toy Libraries are exciting places to visit, like an Aladdin’s cave full of things you want to take home; they are centres for lending the best toys and games which adults and children can enjoy together. Many of our toys promote inclusion, with some specially designed for children with disabilities. We also have a wide range of resource books and multicultural toys. We are happy to give advice about specific toys for individual children, or alternatively what resources would suit group play. Come and visit us! Toy Libraries Closed Until Further Notice

After careful consideration of the risks from coronavirus to both staff and members, we have decided to close the toy libraries until further notice.

We will not charge any overdue fees on toys currently out on loan. You can either hold onto the toys until we reopen, or return them to Exeter Scrapstore during their opening times. Please clean toys thoroughly and put in closed bags . The Scrapstore is currently open 11am-4pm Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri and Sat 10am-1pm. Do not return on a Tuesday as the store will be closed.

We are very sorry to take this action, but we want to help contain the virus as much as possible and protect our members.

We will post any updates on Facebook and our website. Please let other members know if you see them.

Thank you for your cooperation and keep washing your hands!

Coronavirus Prevention

We are concentrating on making sure that children, staff and visitors understand the importance of the following measures to help stop the spread of any illness or virus

  • Wash hands often, with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds, particularly
    • Before leaving home
    • On arrival at Toy Library and before playing with our toys
    • After using the toilet
    • Before preparing food
    • Before eating any food, including snacks
    • Before leaving the toy library
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue, throw the tissue in a bin, then wash your hands
  • Do not attend Toy Library
    • If you or your child is ill or has a temperature
    • If you have been in contact with the virus. Please email admin@mgrtoylibrary.org to let us know. Late fees will not be charged for self-isolations.
  • Cleaning Toys
    • We aim to clean all toys as they are returned, and routinely clean toys that are played with during sessions
    • Please clean toys thoroughly before returning them
  • Closures
